The Mercedes-Benz G-Class or G-Wagen is a four-wheel drive full-size luxury SUV produced by Steyr-Puch in Austria and manufactured by Mercedes-Benz. Its boxy styling and body-on-frame constructions characterize the G-Wagen. Using three fully-locking differentials, the G-Wagen is one of the few vehicles to have such a feature.

Since its launch in 1979, the G-Wagen has carried on largely unchanged except a few cosmetic changes, more luxurious features, and updated engines. That’s all going to change in 2017 when Mercedes is expected to launch a comprehensive facelift for the vehicle, but the end of the decade will also bring a baby G-Wagen which will bring the chunky SUV look to the masses. The crossover is reportedly on sale as a 2020 model.

Built on the MF2 platform, the baby G-Wagen will be lightweight and can carry up to seven people. It’s supposed to be as a mixture of G-Class, featuring the proportions of B-Class and the dynamics of GLA. The entry-level version will be wearing a three-cylinder engine derived from the Renault and all-wheel drive feature. It’s available with an off-road package with variety powertrain options: the 1.6-liter gasoline engine with 122 hp, the 2.0-liter gasoline engine with 272 hp, the 1.8-liter diesel engine with 109 hp, and the 2.1-liter diesel engine with 136, 170 or 204 hp. The top version, GLB45 AMG will be wearing a twin-turbo 380 hp engine to be associated with a 9-speed automatic transmission.
