Tips for starting up your own garage
If you’re into cars and want to work within the automobile industry, then starting up your own garage could be the start-up idea for you. Running your own garage can be profitable and is very rewarding, especially when you are turning a good revenue. You get to choose your own hours of work, keep the profits, and you no longer need to ask permission if you want to go on holiday.
As with starting any business, there are a few considerations that you should think about before starting up. You should consider the location (very important for a garage), how you are going to employ the right staff, and the equipment you are going to need (such as a Multi-vehicle transportation service).
To help start you off, we have put together a brief guide on starting up your own garage.
The location of your garage
As a start-up, you need to get most things right straight away, and one decision you will need to make is the location. Your garage needs to be easily accessible, visible to passing traffic, and situated in an area where there’s demand for automotive services. The easier it is for people to get to you, the more likely it is that people will use you when they need work done on their vehicle.
Employing staff
You can’t run a garage without staff. When starting up, it’s important you employ the right people for the job, as they will represent your business to every customer who walks through the door. Whether it’s greeting clients, diagnosing issues, or working under the hood, your team’s skill and attitude will make or break your reputation. When looking for employees, you could advertise on social media sites like Facebook, or you could go down the route of using a recruitment company. Word of mouth often brings the best employees, as you are more likely to find someone reputable.
Choosing the right insurance
Every business needs insurance. There are various insurances that you should have as a garage owner, as these will protect you should something unexpected occur. Public liability insurance is very important. Employers’ liability insurance is also legally required if you hire staff, covering claims from employees who may be injured or fall ill because of their work. When getting a quote, the best thing to do is to get a quote from a comparison site. They work similar way to car insurance, where various providers will give quotes, helping you find the best price. If you have any questions, you can call one of the providers up, and a member of their team will be able to help you. Or if you prefer, you can drop them an email.
When are you planning on starting your own garage, and where will your garage be? Which of the above recommendations did you find most helpful? Is there anything missing in our guide that you think we should be adding? Let us know in the comment box below. We look forward to hearing from you.
