Design Your Own Plug-In Hybrid Coupe! BMW i8 Configurator Is Now Live
Even if you can’t afford a luxury car, it’s sometimes fun to peruse an online configurator and “build” one to suit your tastes.
It’s now possible to play with the options on a 2015 BMW i8 coupe, as that plug-in car’s online configurator is now live.
Building your ideal plug-in hybrid coupe won’t take long, as there aren’t many options available on the $136,650 (including destination) i8.
As with the 2014 i3 electric car, BMW eschewed traditional trim levels for “World” packages that come with their own individual interior styling.
Orders were initially limited to the top “Pure Impulse World” package, but it’s since been joined by base Mega World, Giga World, and Tera World packages.
Each version features some unique elements, including BMW i blue seat belts on the $3,000 Tera World package, and grey perforated leather on the $10,800 Pure Impulse World.
Aside from the trim packages, the only other options are exterior colors and wheels and tires.
BMW offers two 20-inch alloy wheel designs: W-spoke, and Turbine. The latter comes with wider tires.
All i8 models come with a wide array of standard features, including Dynamic Damper Control, a hybrid-specific version of BMW’s Dynamic Stability Control, navigation, and a Harman/Kardon Premium Sound audio system.
The sole plug-in hybrid setup consists of a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder gasoline engine that drives the rear wheels, and an electric motor that drives the front wheels. BMW estimates combined output at 357 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque.
A 7.1-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack provides enough electricity for 20 miles of driving at speeds of up to 75 mph.
BMW delivered the first i8 coupes at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance last month. Less-ceremonious deliveries to customers will continue.
