Since the brainwaves of a sleeping person are very different than someone who is awake, the sensor can calculate a person’s level of fatigue. The signals will then be gathered and sent to the smartphone app via Bluetooth connection, which uses a special algorithm to determine a fatigue score based on a 0 to 100 scale. If the level is at 80 or higher, which means you are falling asleep, the app will make your phone vibrate and then sound an alarm. In case the driver ignores the warning and keeps driving, the app will then send an alert to your friends, whose numbers you have preprogrammed into the app.

“Physically, it resembles a posh schoolgirl’s headband,” said Sam Wu, Founder of U-Wake, whose friend was hit by a driver who was falling asleep behind the wheel. “The idea of U-Wake was conceived when we noticed that there weren’t enough devices that alert users they are experiencing driving fatigue before it takes place. Therefore, we set out to create something that will do exactly that to help users understand their alertness and take necessary actions when experiencing fatigue,” said Wu.
