14 countries. Yep. You read that right. A stock Audi A6 has traversed 14 countries with a single tank of gas, setting a Guinness world record in the process.

The 28 hour trip began in the Netherlands on June 9, and ended the following day in Hungary. Rebecca Jackson and Andrew Frankel, the pair of drivers, traversed 1158.9 miles without once refueling. Over the course of the journey, their A6 navigated passed through Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, and Serbia.

The German sedan managed an incredible 63 mpg U.S., scoring far higher than the EPA’s 55.8 mpg rating and making the Prius look like a gas guzzler.

This insane mileage was obtained using “hypermiling techniques,” where drivers travel at a speed that minimizes fuel consumption, and foregoing such amenities as the air conditioning. In this case, the team needed to manage at an average of 50 mph to get its results, and did so in spite of traffic and detours.

While the U.S. doesn’t get the A6 2.0 TDI, it does get several of its siblings. This includes the A3, Audi’s entry sedan that has received high praise and was named car of the year in 2014. The enthusiast in me wishes the buying public would forgo the stigma against diesel and embrace it, especially because oil burning cars are cleaner and faster than ever.

Audi is constantly generating new technologies making individualized transportation more efficient than ever before. If you want your next ride to combine both style and sustainability, look no further than the four rings.
