VR vs. AR – What’s The Difference?


Over the last few years, we’ve been seeing a lot of games move from the physical to the virtual world. Far from a sad thing, it’s one of the most exciting developments for gaming and immersion for a long time. Innovations like Virtual reality allow players to jump into a game or experience in the most real way imaginable.

While there’s been Virtual, there’s also been Augmented reality, making us pause for one question. What on earth is the difference between the two? And it’s an increasingly common question to ask. Especially since we’re seeing both entering our daily lives in the most un/expected places.

VR Versus AR – What’s the difference?

 

Virtual Reality

The way VR works is that it is a method of immersing the user completely into whatever world it’s building. For example, for games that use VR technology, it would emphasise the use of visuals, intuitive controls and location-based sound.

Examples of this include the likes of Pavlov VR, where the player is in and not just playing the game. Other examples of this include Oculus Rift of the HTC Vive that provide interactive, 360-degree video immersion.

Companies involved in architecture, game design, even archaeology can use VR to get a more immersive perspective of the environment they’re designing or researching

Augmented Reality

Best examples of Augmented Reality? Remember Pokémon Go? What AR refers to is the opposite of VR. By that, I mean that instead of putting the viewer/player into another environment, it pulls items or graphics into our world. Another example is Apple’s latest iOS 12 update, allowing users to see digital or computer assets placed in our everyday settings.

Where do we see this? One of our previous articles goes into one such area: retail. More and more consumers are expecting to see more Augmented reality in their purchases. Allowing them to make the smarter choice in what they want to buy.
