Volvo’s New S90 Concept Incorporates Visuals, Sound and Scent

Long day at work? Looks pretty comfy huh? Volvo’s S90 Ambience Concept vehicle aims to help those tensions melt away while sitting in the back seat.

The car was just unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show, the specially built S90 has “seven visual themes synchronized with audio and scent.” It is based on the three-seat S90 Excellence executive car and is designed to make the atmosphere of that S90 even more luxurious for the passengers being chauffeured around.

If you’re wondering why a carmaker would load its cabin up with a smell-and-light show, well, Volvo’s head of design Robin Page explains it like this: “The Ambience Concept redefines luxury by taking it beyond material choices, creating a car that connects with your senses. The design explores how people feel inside the car and enables them to influence their own mood and well-being.”

Volvo explains that options range from “relaxing to invigorating” and include themes like Northern Lights, Scandinavian Forest and Swan Lake. You can also relax the ride away with Nocturnal mode or rely on the “boost of fresh and uplifting energy” of Freedom mode – an automotive version of a shot of espresso, from the sounds of it.

The company says that this concept is built specifically for the China market. Martin Andersson the senior commercial product manager at Volvo Cars’ special vehicles department said that concept” provides a contrast to China’s sometimes hectic city environments.”
