A Quick Guide on How to Scrap a Car Without a Title

Do you have a junk car taking up space on your property but can’t find the title to sell or scrap it?

Getting rid of an unsalvageable vehicle may seem like an easy feat, especially when you can quickly search for “Sell my car for cash“, for example, and find a service in your area that will buy your car, no matter what condition it’s in. But, without that one piece of paper, it can quickly devolve into a massive headache. Fortunately, while it may be a little bit harder, there are plenty of ways you can get rid of an old car without the title.

Are you ready to get rid of that old lemon on blocks taking up room in your driveway once and for all – but aren’t sure where to start? We’ve got you covered. Here’s everything you need to know about how to scrap a car without a title.

Finding Proof Without a Title

When selling or scrapping a car, even a junk or unsalvageable one, you need to provide evidence that you legally came into possession of it. Otherwise, it would be much easier for car thieves to profit off of their misdeeds.

Unfortunately, because of this, it’s difficult and even impossible to sell or scrap a junk car without providing proof of ownership in most states.

If you know you have a title to the vehicle you’re trying to scrap or sell, but you don’t have a copy of that title on hand, you can request a copy of it from your local DMV. That said, a car’s title is not the only way to provide evidence that you legally came into possession of it.

If you have proof of purchase or evidence that the original owner gave the car to you, you can present this evidence to the DMV, who will offer you an affidavit that will allow you to sell or scrap the vehicle. Alternatively, if you don’t have a title, but you do have a valid registration, you may be able to sell it to a reputable car for cash company instead.

Take It Apart

If you know your way around a toolbox, another way to make a little cash off your junk or unsalvageable car is to take it apart and sell the valuable parts yourself.

You may not be able to sell everything or get as much as you would be able to get if you sold the entire car. But specific parts can still fetch you a little bit of a return if you sell them yourself or to a collector or specialty shop. Start by removing any salvageable pieces, check to ensure they’re still in working order, and clean them up a bit. Then do a little research into prices and post them for sale.

You can even remove and sell your old car’s tires if they’re still in decent shape.

Once you sell everything you can, you should go through the remaining scrap to see what you can donate, what you should recycle, and what you can throw away.
