Concept GLC Coupé Officially Debuted In Shanghai Auto Show

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the Concept GLC Coupé this week at the Shanghai Auto Show. Remember when we saw the introduction of the then-controversial BMW X6 in 2008, which was the first SUV to feature the sloping roofline as seen on this Merc’s new design? At that time, consumers took to the fastback design, so much so that BMW created the X4 in reaction. To compete in this newly fabricated segment, Mercedes responded with its smaller but similarly styled GLE model and began to share in BMW’s success.

The Concept GLC Coupé, Mercedes’ next foray into this genre, takes into consideration the brand’s legacy as well as its future. It incorporates gullwing doors, the swooping profile and the low center of gravity familiar to the brand’s classic coupés. The fastback and cues taken from the AMG GT supercar indicate where the brand is heading, especially with its future SUVs.

GLA 45 AMG Edition 1 (X 156) 2013The powertrain is strongly indicative of the likelihood that this sporty crossover will go into production without much variation from the concept. Using the current direct-injected 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 (producing 367 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque), the concept also employs a nine-speed automatic transmission turning all wheels. With emphasis on all of these features, it is probable that Mercedes is letting consumers know that they will soon be able to get their hands on their own GLC Coupés soon. Fortunately for those who prefer practicality over style, the GLC will also be available as a regular crossover without a nipped and tucked behind.
