2015 Camaro Will Make You Hot Under The Hood

The Camaro and Mustang have been rivals since Chevy produced a competitor against Ford’s overwhelmingly successful muscle car in 1966.

For the sixth-generation Mustang, Ford made a significant upgrade when it swapped out the ruinous rear live axle in favor of fully independent suspension, among other improvements. These alterations have been so significant that reviewers have claimed that the Mustang has begun encroaching on sports car territory.

As a result, the 2015 Camaro needs to meet exceedingly high expectations if it is to find success among consumers. And meet expectations it does.

Perhaps the biggest news is that the most basic Camaro will receive a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine for the first time since the 1980s. Unlike the engine from the 80s, this power plant is meant to give drivers big power (275 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque to be exact) without sacrificing fuel economy. Despite those impressive numbers, this configuration manages to yield an efficient 30 mpg on the highway.

The other powertrains offered are the punchy 3.6 liter V-6 shared with many of GM’s other premium products and the monstrous V-8 that can be found under the hood of the current generation Corvette.

This hierarchy of 4-6-8-cylinder engines, listed from lowest to highest price, is meant to offer consumers packaging that makes sense. In a Mustang, the 310 hp 2.3 liter Ecoboost engine is outfitted as the mid-range option, making its lineup read 6-4-8. In other words, Mustang drivers pay more to be economical. This is Chevy’s biggest advantage over Ford.

Chevy has also shaved 200 pounds off the Camaro’s curb weight, demonstrating significant savings over the outgoing model. The interior is higher quality than the previous generation but much of the style is the same, aside from the lines being trimmed down to offer a sportier look.

Drivers are also offered some fresh tech, including several drive options such as Snow/Ice, Tour, Sport, and a Track setting unique to the high performance SS model.

Other perks include one 8 inch screen for the instrument clusters and another for the infotainment system.  There is also an interior LED package allowing the driver to personalize the lighting to match his or her tastes.

The 2015 Camaro is sleeker, lighter, faster, and techier than the outgoing model. Only time will tell if Detroit’s bow tie can outsell the blue oval in this round of their nearly 50 yearlong rivalry.
